“The nice thing about the 27 holes of Michigan golf at McGuire's Resort is that golfers of all skill levels can come out and have an enjoyable round: seniors, kids, ladies – even beginners. And over the “course” of 40-plus years, some of the kids who took their first swings are coming back to McGuire's for another round – and this time they have their kids and grandkids with them!”
— Phil Himes, Head Professional, McGuire's Resort

The Spruce Golf Course
… is a classic design that can be enjoyed by all levels of players. The terrain features a mix of flat and rolling fairways as well as some very challenging holes.

Spruce would actually play quite easily, except for the scattered pines and hardwoods that line the fairways, making shot placement off the tee a priority. Four par-4's play at 400-plus yards, with three more at around 390, proving ample opportunity to use your driver off the tee.

The tee boxes and fairways are well-maintained and the medium-sized, mildly undulating greens are some of the most consistent putting surfaces in the state.  Yardage plaques and a 150-yard stake provide ample measurements from tee to green. Greatly appreciated are the hole diagrams at both the tee areas and on the scorecards.

For those staying here with us, the course is right outside your door. You'll tee off a chip-shot from your cozy bed!

Let's play the course!Michigan Golf Course
The opening hole provides a wide, rolling fairway with a tight approach to a narrow green, tucked into an elevated perch with small traps nearby.

On the 405-yard par-four 2nd, which is also the number-one handicap, you must drive past the right fairway bunkers to have a clear shot at the green on the approach. Anything more than 170 yards away on the second shot will present a blind entry.

The par-three 3rd is pine-lined and quite pretty, with bunkers on either side and is followed by the par-four 4th that bends right to left. Distance is required off the tee on 4, as the most favorable landing area is past the 150-yard marker on the right.

The par-three 5th is picturesque, but can prove to be quite difficult if the wind is up. A stream and pond immediately in front of the putting surface demand accuracy off the tee.

Holes 6 and 7 are mid-range par fours that play fairly straight along rolling fairways. Mature trees near the greens make approaches difficult on both of these holes. The left side of the fairway is the prime landing area on the yardage, which is heavily bunkered and narrows considerably. Long hitters can reach in two.

The 9th hole on the front presents a straight and narrow fairway, lined with blue spruce and red pine. A pond just right of the green is not readily visible from the fairway – check out the hole diagrams!

Careful! The backside features water hazards on five of the first six holes.
The 10th is straight with lots of room – and is one of those holes that would play very easily if not for the scattered pines in the fairway. The huge putting surface slopes from back to front and raises tension for even the best putters. The same is true for the 11th; this is the must birdie hole to win two bits from your competitors.

The water hazards on both 12 and 13 should not come inMcGuires Michigan Golf Resortto play, unless shots are badly pushed. They provide some aesthetic beauty and can be a nuisance if the wind is up.

The 14th bends to the left, enticing long hitters to cut the corner by driving over the water hazard. The fairway in this area is merely 20 yards wide – making the area just left of the huge oak the most advantageous driving position. If you land it on the fairway, an easy approach on this number 2 handicap is waiting.

Hole 15 bends in the opposite direction with a pond on that side, discouraging long hitters from trying to cut the corner. A layup just past the bunkers on the left will leave a good second shot – which could possibly reach the green for a great eagle or birdie try. This par five plays just 447 from the white tees.

There are trees all over on 16, which is the longest par four on the course at 420 yards.

17 is short in actual distance, but plays 50 yards or longer as it is entirely uphill. This precedes an easy finishing hole – a straightaway par three, which slopes off on the right near the putting surface.

Norway Course
The 18-hole Spruce Course is complemented by our 9-hole Norway Course, which plays to between 2,792 and 2,358 yards. Norway is similar to Spruce in topography, but has wider fairways and less intrusive trees and foliage.

For those looking for a classic resort golf experience, Norway provides ample opportunity for high handicappers and casual golfers to enjoy the game.

One of the amenities missing at many upscale golf resorts is a layout that is user-friendly to beginners. Norway provides this and also is a pleasant experience for seasoned golfers looking to work in an extra nine.

Tips from Head Professional Phil Himes:

How should the first hole be played?
“From the blue tee, this hole plays as a dogleg right 418 yds. From the white tees  it's a straightway hole — a very nice opening hole. Make sure you use one extra club for your second shot."Michigan Golf at McGuires Resort in Cadillac Michigan

What's the best par-5 on the course?
“Fifteen is a great risk/reward par-5 at 504 from the blue tees. With a good tee shot, your chance of making birdie are very good. Your second will be over water to a green protected by bunkers; the shot will probably be from 180 to 205.”

What's the best par- 3 on the course?
“Number five. This par-3 plays down hill over a pond which is located in front of the green. This narrow green is easy to misjudge so use one less club, but you still need to hit the ball.”

What's the toughest hole on the golf course?
“Number 14 from the blue tees plays 450 dogleg to the left with water down the left-hand side and trees down the middle of the fairway. Your second shot will play from 205-230, one of best par-4's in the Cadillac area. If you make four here give yourself a pat on the back (and get your partner to buy the next round!).”

What's the most difficult green on the golf course?
“Number three is a par-3 that plays anywhere from 170 to 192 yards from the blue tees. You will need to use a longer iron or a hybrid. The green slopes from the back to front, so for the most part, you'll always have a downhill putt. When you leave McGuire's — you will remember this hole!”
